Making of - "The Visitor"

Cockpit sequence

First, a shot of the Esplanade was taken way up from the Hitachi Towers on my mini DV, digitized and used for my backdrop footage - you can still see the reflection of my camera from the window!

a picture of an Apache cockpit was found and background removed in Photoshop, and a TGA image with an Alpha channel is created Reflections of the helmet are also added as a seperate layer by controlling the opacity of that layer

A test composite is done in Photoshop.

3DS Max is used to create the rotor blades and shadows falling on the helmet and cockpit. This footage (in RPF format) will be used to composite into the cockpit to fake shadows

Combustion is then used to key out the blue and to add motion blur to the blades using the RPF data rendered in 3DS Max. Final touches such as color correction, lighting, grain is also added. Final composite

Flyby sequence

Background shot taken and digitised in uncompressed video

footage loaded into 3DS Max and a 3D representation of the ground/sea was created. Lights are added in relation to the live footage to receive shadows. Apaches are then animated using path constraint. How it looks rendered

Combustion used to key out the blue areas. Motion blur added together with other elements such as 3D fog, water particles, etc.
